For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of owning my own set of professional makeup brushes, but I have never been able to justify the expense.
I’m not a makeup artist.
I don’t post pictures or videos of myself online.
And I’m a WAHM mom who rarely leaves the house after 5 pm.
But when the top of my favorite eyeshadow blending brush broke a few weeks ago, I decided to splurge on a more expensive replacement, and I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY with how much easier it was to not only apply product to my eyelids, but also BLEND the product for a more flawless, professional finish with the new brush.
So when my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday this year, I told him I would really love to invest in a proper set of makeup brushes, and when he gave me the green light, I spend a RIDICULOUS amount of time researching all of the different brushes that are on the market so I could figure out which brushes I needed, and how I could get them all at an affordable price.
Now, if you’ve been following the beauty section of my blog for a while now, you know I am IN LOVE with Jaclyn Hill, but I rarely purchase any of the products she recommends because they are always top-of-the-line and out of my price range. But after I stumbled upon her ALL ABOUT MAKEUP BRUSHES tutorial on YouTube (see below!), I was totally blown away.
I was convinced she would recommend nothing but the MAC brushes, but she actually introduced me to a brand that is similar in quality but HALF THE PRICE. The brand is called Sigma, and I am completely in love with them. Their brushes are made with synthetic fibers, which I initially thought would be a bad thing, but as Jaclyn explains, synthetic brushes do not absorb makeup products like real hair brushes do, which means you get better coverage when you use them.
I ended up purchasing the Sigma Premium Brush Kit after watching this tutorial, and I am absolutely thrilled I did. The cost of the kit has gone up since this tutorial was filmed (I paid USD$217 for my kit), but I think it was worth every penny. With that said, there are other, more affordable brush sets available, like the Sigma Most-Wanted Brush Set, the Sigma Beauty Basic Eyes Kit, and the Sigma Beauty Basic Face Kit, and you can also buy each brush separately if you only want a couple.
Anyway, check out Jaclyn’s Makeup Brushes 101 tutorial below to find out EVERYTHING you need to know about makeup brushes – which makeup brushes you need, what each brush is for, the correct technique for using each brush, how to clean your makeup brushes, the benefits of synthetic brushes versus real hair brushes, what to look for when buying makeup brush sets, what brand will give you the biggest bang for your buck, etc.
