Plus, when all of this is over, knowing how to trim your hair will help you save money on trips to the hairstylist! Ready to learn this awesome skill? Read on!
How to Trim Your Own Hair: The Basics
1. Invest in a Pair of Hair Cutting Shears
To ensure a professional-looking trim, you need a pair of quality hair cutting shears. Don’t worry – you don’t have to spend a ton of money to get a good pair. These high-end shears ensure a clean cut every single time. Don’t under any circumstances use kitchen scissors as they can give you even more split ends. Investing in proper hair cutting shears is a necessity for an at-home hair cut.
2. Cut Less Than You Think You Need To
You can always cut more of your hair, but you can’t put your hair back. Trim less hair than you think you need to, and remember, if you’re cutting your hair while it’s wet, it will be even shorter when it’s dry.
3. Get Some Hair Styling Clips
Hairstyling clips are a must if you’re going to trim your own hair. Sectioning off your hair with clips will make the process so much easier, allowing you to see better and avoid a choppy, uneven look!
4. Moisturize Before Cutting
Before you go in with the scissors, make sure your hair is prepped and protected with a moisturizer. Get your hair damp and moisturize it with a product like the Moroccan Oil Mending Infusion for a clean cut. It eliminates dryness, fights frizz and prevents damage, protecting your hair from breakage and split ends.
How to Trim Split Ends at Home
Trimming your own split ends will ensure your hair stays as healthy as possible until you can get to your hairstylist. It elongates the wait time so you can save money and time. Start by taking a section of your hair (you can clip the rest of your hair back with a clip if it makes things easier). Lace your fingers through your hair with your pointer finger on top, middle finger on the bottom and ring finger on top. Slowly slide your fingers down your hair and you’ll notice split ends will pop out. Cut any of the split ends that pop out with your hair cutting shears.
When you get to the bottom, cut the ends of your hair with just the tips of the shears. Do this slowly so you’re not cutting length from your hair. Repeat this on each section of hair until you have gone through your entire head!
How to Trim the Back of Your Own Hair
Trimming the back on your own hair sounds trickier than it is. Unless you have a pixie or really short hair cut, all you have to do is bring the back of your hair to the front and trim it with the front of your hair. All of your hair should be the same length.
To help you get a consistent length, you can use hair ties (one for each side of your hair) and place them just above the length you want to cut. Make sure the hair ties are at the same place on each side and trim directly underneath them. If you have a pixie cut, take a look at the tutorial below to see how to trim the back of your pixie!
