How to Air Dry Your Hair without Frizz

1. Use a Sulfate-Free Shampoo
Your shampoo can make a huge difference in the health of your hair. Moisture is a priority if you want to fight frizz, so stick to a sulfate-free shampoo. Suflates strips natural oils from the hair and make it dry, while sulfate-free shampoos maintain the hair’s natural oil levels. This leaves your strands with more moisture, and in turn, less frizz.

2. Cold Water Shot
Minimizing frizz happens before you even step out of the shower. You want to seal your cuticles and the best way to do this is with a cold water shot right at the end of your shower. For the last 30 seconds or so, dial down the heat to the coldest water you can get. Not only does it benefit your hair, it also offers other important benefits like moisturized skin and scalp, muscle recovery and increased blood circulation.

3. Comb Your Hair In the Shower
This may seem backwards to some people, but you’ll want to start combing your hair in the shower, while your conditioner sets. If you brush your hair while it’s dry or even starting to dry, you’re opening your cuticles up to damage and frizz. Be sure to detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush. A comb detangles without displacing the hair too much. Don’t brush your hair again when you’re out of the shower- the less you touch your hair when it’s air drying, the better.

4. Use a Microfibre Towel
Rubbing and drying your hair with a cotton towel is the most common cause of frizz. Microfibre towels cut your drying time in half and are amazing for fighting frizz. They’re incredibly absorbent and lightweight and help your hair dry sans heat. Use it at home, bring it to the gym and pack it up for your travels- it’s one of the best products you can have for frizz-free hair.

5. Apply a Leave-In Conditioner
If you haven’t been using a leave-in conditioner, it’s time to start. Work a leave-in product into your hair when it’s damp to lock in moisture, reduce frizz and detangle. Distribute it evenly throughout your hair and let it work its magic. Just a few sprays will leave you with gorgeous shine and super hydrated strands.

6. Add Natural Texture
If you don’t want to use hot tools on your hair, but still want to give it style and texture, place it into braids or a bun while it’s damp and let it air dry. Both of these will give your hair movement and soft natural waves. Braiding holds the hair taut, which helps it dry smoother and minimize frizz. Apply a bit of styling product then section your hair into two braids and let them dry. You can also twist your hair into a bun for softer waves. Once dried, use a hairspray to set it.

7. Focus Product on the Ends
The tips of your hair are most prone to damage and breakage, and if your hair splits, it results in a lack of definition and frizz. Plus, you’re prone to greater breakage if you don’t treat it. Focus your hair serums or oils on the ends to temporarily conceal split ends.

8. Deep Condition Once a Week
If your hair is thick and/or curly, it’s especially important to feed it with extra moisture. The oils from the scalp may have a harder time travelling down the hair shaft on curly hair than on straighter hair. Use a deep conditioning mask on your hair once a week to give it a dose of extra hydration. This one restores moisture to dry, brittle hair with an anti-oxidant rich formula of rosehip oil, B vitamins and algae extract.

9. Leave Your Hair Alone
As tough as it may be, try as hard as possible not to touch your hair when it’s air drying. That means no brushing, no running your fingers though your hair, no scrunching and no finger-twirling. Touching your hair roughs up the cuticle and essentially undoes all the hard work you’ve just done to smooth and fight frizz. Let your hair be while it dries for the best results.
